Adult/Adolescent/Pediatric SANE Training

  • Online Self-Study Dates: February 3 – March 7, 2025
  • On-Site Training Dates: March 10 - 14, 2025

This educational training will follow the International Association of Forensic Nurses guidelines for Adolescent/Adult/Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE). Prior to the five-day in-person training, each participant must complete a 24-hour online, self-study module.

The SANE training participants will learn the specific protocols in the care and examination of sexual assault victims, including the different aspects of the sexual assault physical examination (history taking, evidence collection, documentation, etc.), as well as how to preserve specimens and ensure chain of custody. In addition, attendees are exposed to members of a Sexual Assault Response Team, and will participate in a mock trial for a better understanding of legal proceedings.

To sit for a SANE certification exam, a nurse must complete all of the requirements of a SANE training course, as well as complete clinical requirements outlined by the International Association of Forensic Nurses, which will be discussed during the training. Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and USI College of Nursing and Health Professions Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning are collaborating with regional partners to host this training. Instructors include SANE-trained and SANE-certified nurses, Indiana State Police forensic scientists, law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys and victim support specialists.

Recognizing the importance of participation across different agencies, the training will not be limited to nurses. The following are considered potential participants: law enforcement, advocates, prosecutors, health care professionals, students and social workers.

Email Jane Friona (jefriona@usi.edu) with questions about the training.

This activity has been approved by the International Association of Forensic Nurses to award contact hours. The International Association of Forensic Nurses is accredited as an approver of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
