Graduate Grading Scale

A = 92-100%   B+ = 88-91%   B = 83-87%   C = 74-82%   F = below 74%

To pass a course with both didactic and clinical requirements, the student must achieve a “Pass” in the clinical component in addition to a B (83%) or better in the didactic component. Letter grades are not given for clinical nor is a clinical “P” (Pass) utilized in computing the course grade, other than the requirement that the student must pass the clinical to earn a B (83%) grade or better. Students who do not receive a “P” (Pass) in the clinical component will receive a letter grade of F in the course.

Each student must have a cumulative minimum average score of 83% on all course exams and quizzes to pass the course, unless there is a specific statement in the syllabus stating otherwise. Points for any other course assignments will be averaged in for a final grade but will not count towards meeting the minimum cumulative exam average.

Input from the clinical preceptor will be considered when determining the clinical “Pass/Fail” in a course. The clinical faculty are solely responsible for assigning the student’s clinical grade in a course.

No extra credit opportunities will be utilized in graduate nursing courses.  All courses for the degree must be completed successfully in order to graduate.

Incomplete Policy

An incomplete may only be used in cases of true hardship when extenuating circumstances have resulted in the student's being unable to complete course requirement by the end of the semester. In the rare instances in which this occurs, the following policies are in effect:

  1. Incomplete will not be used to allow for remedial work; student work must be passing.
  2. The student must meet with her/his advisor to reassess their plan of study.
  3. If an incomplete is received in a clinical course, enrollment in the next clinical course is dependent upon faculty evaluation. This may include:
    • Review of incomplete course assignment status.
    • Review of student status in the Graduate Nursing Program.
    • Progression will not be allowed until the pre-requisite course requirements are successfully completed.
    • If a student is completing a course with an adjunct faculty as lead instructor, the program chair must review the reason for the incomplete grade assignment and agree to the incomplete grade assignment. For courses taught by an adjunct faculty, subsequent course work will be graded by the program chair or designee.

All University policies regarding incomplete are applicable to nursing courses. Refer to the USI Registrar's Office webpage.

A grade of “B” (83%) or above, “P” (Pass) or “IP” (In Progress), must be received in each DNP course to progress to the next course. A letter grade will be awarded for all DNP courses except the DNP project courses.

The project courses will be graded as “P” (pass),“F” (fail), or “IP” (In Progress). a grade of “IP” (In Progress) may be awarded in the event a student is unable to complete the assignments within the course semester during NURS 866. An “IP” (In Progress) requires enrollment in NURS 866 in the successive semester. An “IN” (Incomplete) grade is an option in NURS 874 and NURS 875. Input from the Practice Partner will be reviewed when determining the grade for the project courses. The DNP faculty are solely responsible for the assigning the student's grade in all courses.
