We'd like to give a shout out to our student organization leaders-today, get to know junior Kaitlyn Sturgeon, accounting and finance, who is president of Beta Alpha Psi.
What are some of your favorite classes or experiences at Romain College?
Some of my favorite classes have been professor Clayton’s business communication class, Dr. Oeding’s business law class, and pretty much any of the courses that I have taken with Professor Maier-Lytle. You can really tell that they are passionate about what they do, and they are supportive of their students. One of my favorite things about USI is the professors. It feels like my second home here.
Why did you choose your current majors?
I am an accounting and finance double major. Ever since I was a child, I have always been very fond of puzzles and organizing, and to me, accounting and finance are the perfect combination of the two.
What are some of your favorite spots on campus and why?
I love being outdoors, so my favorite spots are anywhere that I can hammock or sit outside and work on homework. I also really enjoy the jazz lounge and the fourth floor of the library.
What advice do you have for incoming freshmen? What do you wish someone had told you?
Take full advantage of the opportunities that come your way, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t be scared to speak with that professional, go to that open house, go to the career fair, or apply for that internship. You will be very thankful you did. You will surprise yourself with just how much you can learn and accomplish when you strike up the courage to simply say “hello” to someone new.
What made you decide to pursue being president of Beta Alpha Psi?
From the moment I heard about Beta Alpha Psi, I knew that it was an organization I wanted to be a part of. I realized the immense value that the organization could bring to my professional development and my future career as a CPA. Over time, I had grown quite fond of the organization, having interacted with many members and professionals. So when I heard that it was in need of a president, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to give back to the organization that gave me so much.
Tell us more about Beta Alpha Psi and why USI students should get involved with it!
Beta Alpha Psi is a fantastic organization for Accounting, Finance, and Computer Information Systems students to participate in. We have speakers that come in every other week for students to learn about what it’s like to work in various financial information careers. We also provide opportunities for professional development, service, and networking. It is a great way to learn about what type of career you might want to pursue after graduation and get your name out there.
What are your career goals?
By pursuing my double major in accounting and finance, I am looking to obtain the 150 credit hours necessary to sit for the CPA exam upon graduation and go on to work in public accounting.
Fun fact about you:
I have 3 guinea pigs at home. Their names are Cocoa, Puff, and Winnie.
