Mark Nickel, Hilliard Lyons Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, presented "Lessons Learned as a Portfolio Manager" to an audience of students and faculty members. Nickel offered his helpful perspective on investments, portfolio management, and economic trends. When it comes to understanding the market, he cautioned to "be aware of history: it may not repeat, but it will often rhyme."
Nickel encouraged students to have long-term focus and to take chances in their career. He found in his own career that even chances that didn't work out well gave him perspective for the next time. He emphasized the importance of communication skills in his field. Because of the complexity of investments and the financial industry, he told the audience that trying to make exceptions for people almost always comes back to haunt you. "It's ok to not please everyone."
