Anticoagulation Therapy Management Certificate Program

Effective anticoagulation therapy requires a systematic and coordinated patient care management by knowledgeable healthcare professionals. The content of this program employs the current guidelines to discuss the management of oral and parenteral antithrombotic agents. The patient populations encompass the acute setting for hospitalized patients as well as those requiring chronic use such as patients with atrial fibrillation or venous thrombotic event. The use of antithrombotic agents in the pregnant female and children is also included. The program was designed utilizing the domains established by the National Certification Board for Anticoagulation Providers for the certification examination.

Who Should Enroll in this Program?

This program is designed for English-speaking nurses, advance practice registered nurses, and pharmacists. Other members of the healthcare team who have or want to prepare for the responsibility of monitoring and managing ambulatory anticoagulation therapy may be interested in the content as well.

Learning Outcome

The learning outcome of this program is to enable the learner to incorporate best practices to the clinical practice of managing anticoagulation therapy utilizing current guidelines through interprofessional collaborative practice.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the physiology of the coagulation system.
2. Relate the pathophysiology in the health conditions requiring anticoagulation management.
3. Recognize the patient assessment findings pertinent to the management of anticoagulation therapy.
4. Differentiate and evaluate the results of the diagnostic tests used in anticoagulation therapy.
5. Discuss the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the various antithrombotic agents.
6. Apply the current guidelines to their clinical practice.
7. Formulate effective teaching plans for patients receiving anticoagulation therapy.
8. Describe the administrative/operational components in providing excellence in anticoagulation service.
9. Assimilate evidence based interprofessional collaborative practice.

Criteria for Successful Completion

• Submit registration and payment.
• A certificate for contact hours will be provided following the successful completion of the study guides for each module, receiving a passing score of 70% or better on the comprehensive final exam and submission of the program evaluation. 

The certificate of completion will be sent via autogenerated email immediately upon the completion of the program evaluation.

Contact Hours (40 Contact Hours)

40 contact hours (13 hours specific to Pharmacotherapeutics)

The University of Southern Indiana designates this activity for 40 contact hours with 13 contact hours related to pharmacotherapeutics for nurses. Thirteen hours of this content meets the pharmacology continuing education requirements for the renewal of the advanced practice registered nurse prescriptive authority license.

The University of Southern Indiana Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning designates this knowledge-based Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) activity for 40 contact hours for completion of this program. Pharmacists who request to have their contact hours reported to the Certified Pharmacy Education Monitor (CPE) must indicate this request during registration and include the correct NABP e-PID# and Birthdate (mmdd).

The University of Southern Indiana Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning designates this activity for a maximum of 40.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this program does not guarantee expertise in the content. Clinical experience and judgment, coupled with an understanding of the content, are necessary to attain competency. Achieving certification via a designated professional organization is an additional step to demonstrate competency.

Enrollment Cost - $700

The fee includes access to the program, along with all resources and handouts. A text, if applicable, is not included in the fee.

Pharmacists who request to have their contact hours reported to the Certified Pharmacy Education Monitor (CPE) must indicate this request during registration and include the correct NABP e-PID# and Birthdate (mmdd). NOTE: Reporting of CEs should be requested during registration. There is an additional $50 charge for reporting.

Registration closes the Wednesday prior to the start date.

Registration by invoicing employer closes two weeks prior to the start date. There is a $25 fee to invoice.
