For this issue’s GWEP student worker spotlight, the bOLDer Bulletin interviewed student worker Macie Martin. Currently, Martin is a senior at USI with an anticipated graduation date in May 2023. She is majoring in health services with a minor in human resources management. Macie began her journey with the GWEP in January 2022. Her duties include giving MINKA Learning Lab for Living Well tours, presenting on various topics to MINKA stakeholders and producing videos promoting the MINKA and its technology.
Before working at the GWEP, Martin worked at the USI Call Center, where she would contact incoming freshman and provide them with information such as scholarships they were eligible for, where their dorms were and what forms they needed. She decided to work for the GWEP after she was a student in a class taught by Dr. Katie Ehlman, Director for the Center of Healthy Aging and Wellness and Professor of Gerontology, where she first heard about the student worker position at the GWEP. Another major reason for switching her student worker position was when Martin changed her major from exercise science to health services. Wanting a job that aligned more with her major, she applied for the student worker position at the GWEP and has been a part of the team since.
Martin says her time at the GWEP has helped prepare her for her future career. Since she has been working at the GWEP, she has expanded her organizational and communication skills and has grown in confidence when presenting herself and her ideas. With these skills, she plans to use her education to be a human resources manager in a hospital or work in pharmaceutical or medical sales.
When asked about her duties in the MINKA, Martin says the work can be challenging but fulfilling. She particularly likes the Artificial Intelligence (AI) component, Josh. Martin says Josh is the most useful AI because he can do multiple actions at one time. Along with the technology present in the MINKA house, she also says the GWEP has a lot of neat ideas for new technology and advises everyone to keep an eye on what new additions will be added to the MINKA house in the future.
