German Teaching Concentration Overview

The P-12 German teaching concentration prepares you with language and cultural skills as well as teaching methodologies to become an effective German teacher. From the start, you can enroll in a practicum at a local elementary after-school program, teaching German. In addition, you can combine your teaching licensure with a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate to enhance your marketability. All of your courses are taught by highly qualified PhD faculty. You’ll be able to practice your oral skills in the Miller Language Laboratory, staffed by native/near-native language tutors. USI offers international language events, guest speakers, language clubs and honor societies. USI highly encourages teaching majors to study abroad at one of USI’s partner institutions (same as on-campus tuition costs). Scholarships are also available to German students.

Responses to a survey indicated that 50 Indiana districts would like to add more language courses to the curriculum. German teachers provide generations of students with analytical skills, upward mobility, and understanding of other cultures. USI German teaching majors have a 100% placement record and they receive national scholarships to study in German-speaking countries. Graduates have taught German and English around the world.
