Minoring in journalism at USI provides you with the basic skills needed to understand and produce works of journalism. The minor is tailored for you if you wish to combine journalism with another field of study to make yourself more marketable. Small classes will allow you to directly engage with faculty. Outside of class but conveniently on campus, you’ll have opportunities to contribute to the award-winning campus newspaper, The Shield, the award-winning radio station, 95.7 The Edge, and USI’s TV station, SETV. Hands-on experiences don’t end on campus. You’ll also find many local paid internships available to you—giving you the chance to build a professional portfolio long before you graduate.
Additional credit hours could indicate a major, second minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
Employers enjoy journalism minors as they write well, possess information gathering skills, are capable of producing on deadline, and have a good work ethic. Once you graduate, you’ll succeed in any field where writing and a command of language are needed. The Journalism minor goes particularly well for students majoring in radio & television, public relations & advertising, English creative writing, history, political science, sociology, criminal justice, and philosophy.
