Reflecting the global reach and historical importance of the motion picture industry’s cultural impact since its inception, the USI Film Studies minor is offered by the Communications Department in collaboration with multiple disciplines throughout the College of Liberal Arts and the university. This 21-credit hour minor primarily focuses on Film History and Film Analysis – examining the crucial intersection of art and entertainment – as well as theoretical foundations that situate the film industry as an economic, industrial, social, and cultural institution. The program is intended to expand each student’s knowledge and appreciation of Film, equipping you with the ability to move beyond passive observation into deeper states of examination within the form, as well as the ability to articulate your distinct perspective about the medium through written and verbal expression.
The Film Studies minor is open to all USI students regardless of your declared major.
Additional credit hours could indicate a major, second minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
Upon completing the Film Studies minor, you will be on your way to joining more significant cultural conversations surrounding the motion picture industry. This knowledge may increase your ability to write and/or speak from an authoritative stance on various topics surrounding filmed entertainment as a critic, historian, or pop culture aficionado. Multiple present and future media outlets are typically used as a platform for your analysis at the local, regional, national, and global levels.
