Food Service Management Specialty

USI’s Food Service Management Specialty prepares you for employment within a variety of food service operations including those sites where special diets are needed such as hospitals, home-delivered meal programs and long-term care. To gain real-world experience, you will complete internships to support career success. A dedicated commercial kitchen and interactive dining room/classroom allow you to practice in a simulated environment prior to your internship. Additional experience is obtained through on-campus retail food service operation lab classes at USI. National Restaurant Association Certifications are available to you in USI’s Food Service Management program.

To apply to the University of Southern Indiana (USI) for undergraduate enrollment:

  • Submit official transcripts from all high schools and colleges you've attended
  • Once USI has processed your application, transcript(s) and scores (if needed), a decision will be made by Undergraduate Admissions and you will receive a notification.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 39,600 openings for food service managers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Most of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Food service managers are employed in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, retail operations, hotels and many others. With the addition of a bachelor’s degree in food service management and experience gained throughout the program, graduates have quickly and successfully stepped into jobs in a variety of food service operation settings. There will be a demand for graduates who possess professional skills and certifications.
