The Food and Nutrition Dietetics specialty at USI is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). While studying dietetics at USI, you will learn about a variety of subjects including food and nutrition science, food service systems, chemistry, biology, psychology and others to understand the role that nutrition plays in disease prevention and health promotion. USI’s dietetics program prepares you for dietetic internships, graduate school and employment in food and nutrition-related jobs. State of the art facilities including a nutrition education and counseling lab, nutrition and health assessment lab, commercial kitchen, experimental kitchen, and interactive classrooms that allow you to apply food and nutrition principles in a cutting-edge environment. You are able to engage in many interprofessional activities both in the classroom and in community settings throughout the area. With a small faculty to student ratio, you will receive considerable attention to ensure nutrition knowledge and skills are understood and appropriately applied.
Students in the ACEND accredited dietetics program at USI will be able to participate in the application process for Dietetic Internships and graduate degree offered throughout the United States. Upon successful completion of an ACEND accredited internship and graduate degree, students are eligible to take the registration exam for dietitians. Registration exam requirements are set by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). If planning to practice in Indiana, they then can apply for licensure. USI graduates have an excellent pass rate for first attempt and 100% pass rate for testers within one year of first attempt on the registration exam for dietitian nutritionists.

There is a secondary application process to be accepted into the Dietetics Specialty. Students may declare a major in pre-Dietetics upon entering the university or complete a change of major form at any point in time.

For students wishing to transfer into the program, after submitting the University application and all transcripts, a review is completed first by the Registrar’s Office. Any courses to be considered for direct transfer as NUTR courses are evaluated by the Program Director. Additional materials for the review may be requested to be obtained by the applicant including, but not limited to, syllabi and textbooks.
After application is made to the program, the application will be reviewed and the student will be notified of a decision. Upon acceptance to the dietetics program, students are provided with a faculty advisor and will be instructed on registration procedures for dietetics courses.
A candidate for the Bachelor of Science or Art in Food and Nutrition degree must meet the general requirements for graduation as outlined in the University bulletin and successfully complete the food and nutrition courses required for the major area of study.
