USI's 18-credit hour nutrition minor is designed for anyone, in any major, who wants to better understand how the food we eat affects our health. You will be able to explore the nutrients in food, current nutrient recommendations, and understand how to apply this information throughout the lifecycle. If you are someone who wonders how improved nutrition can help people on a large-scale, you will want to complete this minor. A minor in nutrition complements many professions where health is the ultimate goal. Added knowledge and skills in nutrition can expand your future job opportunities. A minor in nutrition can be a perfect fit for students studying many different majors, especially in health professions, exercise science, pre-professional programs, public health, as well as many other majors.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
Students from a variety of majors including nursing, exercise science, health services, public health, psychology, and many others have been able to discriminate nutrition facts from fiction and have learned how to apply sound information to many different individuals in a variety of settings. Consumers are constantly overrun with claims about nutrients and diets. Regardless of the major, studying evidence-based nutrition information grounded in science can help not only you as the consumer but also other consumers you may be working with to optimize future health.
