Senior nursing students providing AED education
February 28, 2025
USI is committed to the safety of everyone who lives on, works or visits campus. Nearly 50 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are located around campus and ready to use in the event of a health event. These are critical lifesaving devices that can significantly improve survival rates during sudden cardiac emergencies. Having AED machines readily available across campus ensures that students, faculty and visitors have access to immediate assistance in the event of a cardiac arrest. The goal is to increase awareness of these devices, their locations and their importance in emergency situations. By strategically placing AEDs in high-traffic areas and providing clear signage, the University is enhancing campus safety and preparedness for medical emergencies.
To further promote awareness and proper use of AED devices, senior nursing students Anna Alexander, Noah Brown, Andelyn Deavery, Keith Dobbs, Bailey Holmes, Holly Mosteller, Emma Russell, Reghan Page and Emily Shockley are collaborating to educate the campus community as part of their service-learning project, led by Dr. Gina Schaar, Associate Professor of Nursing. These students play a vital role in leading hands-on demonstrations, informational sessions and will collaborate with faculty to incorporate the information, including maps, into the syllabus statements. Through interactive outreach and initiatives, they are helping to empower individuals with the confidence and knowledge needed to respond effectively in an emergency.
To ensure continuous awareness, faculty and staff must discuss the AEDs with students and visitors at the start of every semester and activity.
Each semester, this information will be included in various publications to continue to promote awareness. If you are interested in learning how to use the device, Public Safety offers free CPR/AED training throughout the year. AED locations can be found on these AED Campus Maps.
