Preventing falls during winter months
February 18, 2025
As another round of cold, winter weather descends upon the region, students and employees are asked to be careful when walking about campus.
Here are some strategies to prevent flips and falls when walking in snowy and icy conditions:
- Wear shoes that provide good traction and are appropriate for the conditions.
- Don’t take shortcuts—stay on paths that have been treated and cleared.
- Pay extra attention to the walking surface. Avoid looking at your phone.
- Anticipate slippery conditions, slow down and take your time when walking in winter weather conditions.
- Be extremely careful getting out of your vehicle—steady yourself on your doorframe until you have gained your balance.
- Turn your feet slightly outward and take smaller flat-footed steps on slippery surface; this will help you maintain your balance.
