At USI, natural and physical sciences are taught with a hands-on approach through science courses dedicated just for educators. Science is integral to modern life and will permit you to develop the confidence, knowledge, and skills to find answers to your own questions about the workings of the biological, chemical, geological, physical and technological world—and in turn, pass those qualities to your future students. At USI, you’ll become a better-informed citizen and find solutions to problems arising from your own needs and experiences in daily life.
The USI science minor provides you with hands-on experiences in astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, meteorology, and physics. Educating students about science is important work as it allows them to take part in public debate and make informed decisions about important issues such as global climate change, natural hazards, pollution and energy. In teaching science, you’ll provide your students with a broader understanding of contributions and achievements of people from many different cultures and nations.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.

Once USI has processed your application, transcript(s) and scores (if needed), a decision will be made by Undergraduate Admissions and you will receive a notification.
Upon acceptance to USI, you'll receive detailed information about next steps, including orientation, registration and housing.
A science teaching minor from USI prepares you for a career in teaching science to elementary school aged children. This degree will give you the technological tools necessary to facilitate the presentation of science to your students and allow you to succeed in future advanced studies related to the teaching of science. A Science minor also sets you apart from other elementary education majors, and may make you more marketable because of the increasing demand for STEM teachers.
