As an art teacher, you will have the opportunity to share your passion for art with your students while making a lasting impact. At USI, you will take many courses in Art Education and Teacher Education (focus on elementary and middle school teaching or teaching in a high school setting) along with many courses related to studio practice. Majoring in education and minoring in art teaching, you will work in state-of-the art labs and studios, to explore and understand different artistic techniques and concepts. You will develop an academically rich foundation of art theory and art history, which you will be able to pass on to your students.
Additional credit hours could indicate a major, second minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
Graduates who receive the (Art Teaching - Elementary / Secondary) degree in art education are qualified to teach visual arts in a wide variety of contexts. Many USI graduates teach 2D and 3D visual art in local and regional public and private schools.
