Legislative Education and Advocacy (LEAD) Day at the Indianapolis Statehouse
The College of Liberal Arts Social Work Department and the Center for Social Justice Education attended Legislative Education and Advocacy (LEAD) Day at the Indianapolis Statehouse on February 23.
Before the sun rose, more than 25 students filled the bus, and the adventure to the capital of Indiana began. Once USI arrived at the State House, students found their seats and were able to speak directly with representatives such as Senator Shelli Yoder, Representative Alex Burton and Representative Wendy McNamara about local, regional and national issues. Before LEAD Day officially began, we were able to visit the House of Representatives Chambers to observe a part of the proceedings of the 2026 Indiana General Assembly Legislative session.
When LEAD Day began, we heard from the Head of the National Association of Social Workers – Indiana Chapter and multiple legislators, leaders and students. The speakers highlighted the importance of social work in society and how they have personally and professionally seen the impact of social workers. State Senator Fady Qaddoura gave a passionate speech about the future of social work, the state and the country and received a standing ovation from all present.
One student noted, “I love hearing the guest speaker's testimonies and words of encouragement for us as future social workers. I think the biggest takeaway from LEAD Day is the inspiration and motivation.”
After the speakers concluded, Dr. Wendy Turner led a tour around the State House to show the students the House and Senate proceedings.
Overall, LEAD provided students with the opportunity to gather at the Indiana Statehouse to actively engage in the legislative process, create meaningful dialogue between students and elected officials, strengthen advocacy skills, deepen understanding of policymaking, promote social justice and unite social workers across the state to advance the core values of the profession.
