Introducing Mary Scheller, Content Marketing Specialist
March 24, 2023
This story is part of a series introducing the seven new content positions that report to University Strategic Marketing within University Marketing and Communication and are embedded in the four colleges and other key departments across campus.
Mary Scheller, Content Marketing Specialist for the College of Nursing and Health Professions, has been a true Screaming Eagle for the past 11 years representing USI. The faculty, staff and students have become like a second family to her. Over the years, she has become a familiar face in the CNHP, and continues to show her passion and love in the work she does each day.
What college or department do you represent and where are you located?
I represent the College of Nursing and Health Professions. My office is on the second floor of the Health Professions Center, HP 2050.
What is your background in marketing and communication?
I double-majored in journalism and English at Indiana University, and I’ve always been interested in writing, layout and public relations. Since my college graduation (many years ago), I have worked in a variety of settings, including the Catholic Diocese of Evansville, the Evansville Courier Company and Keep Evansville Beautiful. I also worked as a freelance copywriter and graphic designer when my four children were younger.
What can you offer in your new position that will play a part in USI’s successes?
I believe in USI’s mission, not only as an employee but as a proud parent of four USI graduates! Although it is a bit sad that my husband and I are now “empty-nesters,” we are both grateful for the education our children received at USI that has allowed them to spread their wings and thrive in their careers. It has been an honor to be able to work in this new role thus far to tell our college's story and assist with all things related to communication and marketing—especially in the area of student recruitment.
How are you getting to know the area you represent, the people who work there and the important work being done in this area?
In my previous role, I worked for both the Bronstein Center for Healthy Aging and Wellness and the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC), so it is interesting to be working on behalf of the entire College now. I’m looking forward to meeting with various groups and committees to help promote events and conferences, design marketing materials and recruit new students.
In this new role, how are you promoting and raising the visibility of the college/department/area you are representing?
Right now, our College leadership and I are still developing a strategy for how best to raise our visibility but we know that email marketing/communication and social media posts will continue to play a role.
What would you like the USI community to know about you?
I am a lifelong resident of Evansville, and I live in the same neighborhood where I grew up, right across the highway from the USI campus.
What is something not many people would know about you?
I spent the summer after I graduated college working at a fish cannery in Alaska! What an incredible first job, and very different from what I do now.
Any favorites, hobbies or interests you want to share?
My husband and I love to ride our tandem bicycle during the summer months and in the fall. During the winter and spring, we switch to walking on the USI-Burdette Trail and hiking in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. I also enjoy camping, reading, listening to live bluegrass music and gardening. And of course, my husband and I like to visit our kids who live in some pretty cool places: Chicago, Louisville and Montana.
