USI DMS Program offers free pregnancy ultrasounds

January 19, 2024

The University of Southern Indiana Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program is offering non-diagnostic ultrasounds to expectant mothers 22-34 weeks pregnant on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons through April 2024. Students will be practicing assigned images under the direction of experienced faculty members.

“This unique collaboration provides the opportunity for students to enhance their practical skills before starting their clinical rotations," said Jordan Thomason, DMS Instructor and Clinical Coordinator. “With our state-of-the-art lab and 3D probes, students can practice various scanning techniques and protocols with direct patient interaction under the guidance of an instructor.”

Sam Fiducci, who works at USI as a Multimedia Learning Designer in Online Learning, was an ultrasound volunteer three times last semester: twice for regular scans and then she returned to help during finals week with the exam portion of the class.

“I was so excited to see that USI offered free ultrasounds to allow the DMS students to practice on actual patients. Most parents-to-be don’t get a ton of ultrasounds, so any extras are truly amazing," she says. “All the students were so excited each time I went in and genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to learn and see a live baby on screen. They asked questions to get to know me and seemed to enjoy hearing about my experience with pregnancy. It was so unique and made me feel like I was also helping the USI community. I highly recommend anyone expecting to sign up!”
