Amy Beard '09 named new commissioner of IDOI
May 21, 2021
On Monday, May 17, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced his selection of Amy Beard '09 as the new commissioner of the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI).
"Amy has the right skill set, experience and dedication to provide great government service to Hoosiers as they purchase insurance that they need to protect their properties and families," Holcomb said. "Her experience at IDOI has been broad, from her work with the Indiana Patient's Compensation Fund and on legislative issues, to her command of the required legal and financial filings of insurance holding companies."
Beard has eight years of experience at IDOI, including five years as general counsel. She has been responsible for review of multimillion-dollar transactions regarding insurance holding companies, ensured the state met all national accreditation standards and served on the Interstate Insurance Product Regulation Commission Regulatory Counsel Committee.
She earned bachelor's degrees in economics and Spanish from the University of Southern Indiana in 2009. She went on to earn her Juris Doctor from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law in 2013. She has served as general counsel for the IDOI since 2017, where she was the chief legal officer, providing legal support and advice to the department and the commissioner on all major insurance matters. In 2019, she was awarded USI's David L. Rice Alumni Achievement Award, which recognizes the success of alumni who have made a positive impact.
The Department of Insurance protects Indiana residents as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. The agency also monitors the financial solvency of Indiana insurance companies.
Beard replaces Stephen W. Robertson, who is stepping down on June 1, 2021, after 11 years as commissioner. Beard begins her tenure as commissioner on June 2.
