USI adds concentrations to Political Science major
October 27, 2016
With baby boomers reaching retirement age and 30 percent of federal employees becoming eligible to retire, numerous positions in government and other fields are projected to open up in coming years. To meet those needs, the Political Science and Public Administration Department at the University of Southern Indiana has added two new concentrations for those seeking a degree in Political Science beginning spring 2017. Students will select a concentration in either Government, Law, and Diplomacy; or Public and Nonprofit Administration. The concentrations will prepare students for a variety of careers in government, law, business, education, nonprofit organizations and the media. The Public and Nonprofit Administration concentration is the only undergraduate program of its kind in the Tri-State area.
"Students completing either concentration will develop leadership and communication skills, analytical and research skills, and interpersonal and problem-solving skills," said Oana Armeanu, department chair and associate professor of political science at USI. "They'll learn to work in teams and focus on problem solving. Our recent graduates, in addition to the traditional government and law-related careers, have opened their own businesses, and work in marketing, managerial jobs, banking and real estate."
Government Law, and Diplomacy (GLAD)
The Government, Law and Diplomacy concentration is geared toward careers in politics, the law or international relations. USI offers study abroad opportunities around the world that prepare students for careers in international politics and service. Graduates have taken jobs working for state and national political leaders. In the coming years, the number of job prospects for lawyers is expected to grow by as much as 6 percent. Students interested in law will find opportunities to participate in LSAT preparation courses or moot court, and will be well prepared for entry into law school.
Public and Nonprofit Administration (PNPA)
The Public and Nonprofit Administration concentration focuses on careers managing public and nonprofit organizations. Students will gain management skills and expertise in leadership, organizational behavior, human resources, public policy, and budgeting. They'll also find opportunities for internships and study abroad. Graduates will be poised to pursue jobs working for government and nonprofit service groups influencing public policy.
