Hall, Wells selected for GLVC Hall of Fame

April 9, 2015

Former University of Southern Indiana men's tennis coach and current Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall and former two-sport USI Hall of Famer Shannon Wells were selected for induction into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame on May 20. The induction ceremony will take place at the Enterprise Rent-a-Car/GLVC Spring Awards Banquet at the Drury Plaza Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri.

Hall and Wells will be joined for induction into the class of 2015 by University of Indianapolis' June (Wernke) Rigney (women's tennis), Lewis University's Duane Chappell (track & field), and Missouri University of Science & Technology's Jordan Henry (track & field), and Tamara McCaskill (women's basketball and track & field).

Hall was a five-time GLVC Coach of the Year in men's tennis, directing the Screaming Eagles to four GLVC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament crowns and to a 123-47 record (.724) from 1996-2002. In addition to the GLVC tournament championships, Hall also directed the regular season titles in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002.

In the 2002 season, Hall led the Eagles to their third-straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and their first victory in the national tournament after putting USI on the national tennis map with regional post-season appearances in 2000 and 2001.,

During his tenure, Hall's squad set the school record for most consecutive conference wins with 34; directed a two-time GLVC Player of the Year in Edgar Linares; the 1998 GLVC Freshman of the Year Andrew Majxner; and 19 All-Conference selections. He also was mentor to current USI men's tennis coach Chris Crawford, who is a two-time GLVC Coach of the Year in his own right.

Arguably one of the best volleyball players in USI history, Shannon Wells was a 2002-03 GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award winner after leading the Eagles' volleyball team to the 2002 GLVC Tournament Championship, three-straight GLVC Green Division championships, the 2000 GLVC regular season title, three-straight 20-win seasons and a berth in the 2002 NCAA Division II Tournament, advancing to the Great Lakes Regional Semifinals.

Wells led USI to an 87-35 overall record and a 41-22 mark in the GLVC through four seasons. Additionally, she was named the 2002 GLVC Player of the Year and was voted the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for volleyball in 2001 and 2002 while also a four-time Academic All-GLVC selection.

The native of Merrillville, Indiana, was a three-time first-team All-GLVC selection and the third player in USI history to be named AVCA All-Region. Wells also garnered a selection to the Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region team three times and was named a third-team Verizon Academic All-District honoree in 2002.

Statistically, Wells remains USI's all-time leader in career service aces (319) and kills (1,866) and is third all-time in career digs (1,353). She also was the fastest player in USI history to reach 1,000 career kills, leading the GLVC two-straight seasons in total kills (553 and 554) while setting a USI single-season record for digs (458) and service aces (125).

Wells twice earned Academic All-GLVC honors in basketball and was named the USI Female Student-Athlete of the Year 2003.
