Terrill to speak about Obama and the confines of race

November 3, 2014

The University of Southern Indiana's Communications Department and the College of Liberal Arts will feature Dr. Robert E. Terrill for the 2014 Community of Scholars Lecture, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Friday, November 14 in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. Terrill will deliberate on the presidency of Barack Obama and the illusion that his election would mark a new post-racial era. He also will discuss how events, such as the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, have effected public reaction to race issues and the continued significance of race.

Terrill's scholarship has focused on the rhetorical criticism of African American public address, and his book, Malcolm X: Inventing Radical Judgment (Michigan State University Press, 2004), earned the Kohrs-Campbell Prize in rhetorical criticism. He has written or co-written essays on the rhetoric of Stephen A. Douglas, W. E. B. Du Bois, Frederick Douglass, Stokely Carmichael, and Barack Obama.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Dr. Stephanie Young at slyoung@usi.edu or 812-464-1737.
