The University of Southern Indiana’s Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries is excited to present Unmasked: The 1935 Anti-lynching Exhibits and Community Remembrance in Indiana.  The installation is a reimagining of two historic exhibitions of anti-lynching art held in 1935.  The installation combines historical artworks and ephemera with contemporary efforts to commemorate the victims of lynching in Indiana.

This project was developed and curated by Alex Lichenstein and Phoebe Wolfskill, colleagues at Indiana University, and Rasul Mowatt at North Carolina State University. Through shared research commonalities, the installation’s display has been brought to USI by Kristalyn Shefveland, Professor of History and Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

A reception for Unmasked begins at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, February 19, following the 2025 Berger Lecture with Randolph McLaughlin and screening of the documentary film How to Sue the Klan. Light refreshments will be served during the reception.  Unmasked curator Alex Lichtenstein and USI Professor Kristalyn Shefveland will be available for questions about the exhibit during the reception. The lecture and film start at 2p.m. on the 19th in Kleymeyer Hall with the reception following afterwards in the McCutchan Art Center.
