The Center for International Program's mission is to make study abroad as affordable and accessible as possible to all USI students. The CIP office recognizes that study abroad can be a big financial commitment. We offer a range of study abroad scholarships to help alleviate the financial burden of study abroad.
Students can apply for all three scholarships in this section through one standard application and may apply for as many as they are eligible for but can receive no more than one. The CIP Study Abroad Scholarship deadline is March 6, 2026 for Fall, Summer I, and Summer II 2026 programs.

The USI Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship provides awards for students of diverse backgrounds and identities. This scholarship is intended to:
For the purpose of this scholarship, diversity may include (but is not limited to) culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, parental status (if you have children), military status, ethnic or racial identities that contribute to the diversity of the student body. This scholarship is not need or merit based, and awards are granted on the strength of a student’s essays and interview.

USI Study Abroad Scholarship applicants can list in their scholarship application if they would like to be considered for any of the USI Foundation Scholarships. The CIP Office nominates students for these Foundation awards as long as they meet the advertised criteria.
In addition to the CIP study abroad scholarships, additional scholarships are offered through other local, regional, national and international organizations, as well as through various study abroad organizations. Boren Scholarship - for less commonly taught languages

Bridging Scholarships - Undergraduate students living in the United Stateswho study abroad in Japan are eligible to apply. Awards are typically US$2,500 for semester programs and US$4,000 for academic-year programs. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.

Critical Language Scholarship -The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a U.S. State Department initiative that offers fully-funded, intensive summer language study abroad in languages essential to national security and global engagement. It provides immersive instruction in less commonly taught languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Swahili, open to U.S. students of all majors.

Deutscher Akademischer Austausch (DAAD) - German government scholarship

Freeman- ASIA - Offers Need-based funding for students to study a language program in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Terms: Summer, Semester, or Academic Year.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program - The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides fellowships for new U.S. college graduates, graduate students, early career professionals, and artists to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) - for high financial need, students of color, and first-generation college students
FEA's mission is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students with financial need who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population, including students of color and first-generation college students.

Gilman International Scholarships - for Pell eligible students only

JASSO Scholarship - Available for qualified US students accepted into a Japanese university or graduate school for a semester or year. Find more information on the JASSO website.
This scholarship program is designed to support up to 45 undergraduate students each year. To qualify, applicants must be accepted into a study abroad program lasting three months or more. Finalists will be invited for an interview.

Scott's Cheap Flights Study Abroad Scholarship - Many of the Scott’s Cheap Flights team members had their first international travel experience when they studied abroad. This inevitably led many of them to keep exploring the world and traveling whenever they could get the chance. They’d like to give others this same opportunity. Twice a year, two outstanding students will win $1,500 scholarships toward their upcoming study abroad program.
Application deadline: March 15th and October 15th. Winners will be notified by March 31st for fall study abroad and October 31st for spring study abroad.

Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship Program - The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in either the United States or Japan. A generous endowment gift of $10 million from Mr. Toshizo (Tom) Watanabe to the U.S.-Japan Council makes it possible to award scholarships to students for whom study abroad would not be possible without financial support. For U.S. or Japanese students studying in either country for a semester or year-long program.
CEA CAPA - CEA CAPA offers all USI students an automatic travel grant of $2,000 for the academic year, $1,000 for one semester, or $500 for summer. USI students are not eligible for any additional CEA CAPA Vouchers or Grants, however, students will be eligible to apply for CEA CAPA scholarships.
CIEE - CIEE offers the Leading Change in Latin America Student Award. They are offering 100 fully funded awards for students to participate in any of their semester programs in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026. With newly added programs in Buenos Aires, Santiago, Chile, and Yucatan, alongside CIEE existing offerings, students have a variety of enriching opportunities to choose from. In addition, CIEE offers need and merit-based scholarships.
Worldstrides - Worldstrides offers all USI students an automatic discount of $200 on program fees as well as other funding options.
ISEP - ISEP has scholarship opportunities aimed at helping you with your study abroad expenses.
Semester at Sea - Semester at Sea (SAS) offers a range of scholarship opportunities to help offset program costs.
