Interdisciplinary Gerontology Minor

USI’s 18-credit hour Interdisciplinary Gerontology Minor prepares you to work with other professions to improve the health and lives of our aging population. With the number of Americans over the age of 65 expected to double during the years 2015-2055, the demand for qualified professionals who understand the needs of this population will be immense. The program helps you prepare yourself for this rewarding profession by understanding the dimensions of aging, mental and physical health changes as we age, and the relationship between aging and lifestyle and our individual and society’s responsibilities in the continuum of care. A 2-credit hour experiential learning requirement allows you to engage in learning about gerontology outside the traditional classroom, and apply what you have learned.

Career Outlook

Evansville Regional Data

Careers in aging are projected to be in high demand due to the aging population in many countries, including the United States. As people live longer, there is a growing need for professionals who specialize in working with older adults.

Having a minor in gerontology can be beneficial for your career prospects, especially if you're pursuing a field related to aging or healthcare. While the specific career outlook can vary based on your major and the job market in your area, a minor in gerontology can enhance your knowledge and skills in working with older adults, which can be valuable in many professions.

This minor will enhance your qualifications and make you more competitive for positions that require knowledge of aging issues. It can also open up opportunities for further study or specialization in gerontology if you decide to pursue a more focused career in this field.
