The end of the semester is coming.
Housing and Residence Life closes to residents at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025.
The Stay Late Request and Summer Contract are on the Housing Portal.
Students are encouraged to begin taking items home in the weeks prior to closing. It will make the move out experience easier if on your last day in Housing you do not have to pack it all up to take home. As a safety precaution, when packing up belongings it is recommended not to leave items in vehicles overnight. |
Residents should move out 24 hours after their last final or by 6 p.m. on May 9, whichever comes first. Residents who need to stay late due to a Friday final or for other reasons must complete a Stay Late Request form.
Step 1: Sign up for a check out time with your RA. Students will check out with their RA at the resident's apartment or residence hall suite, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, May 2-Friday, May 9 and 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, May 10. Residents must be approved by HRL to check out after 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9.
RAs will post check out sign up forms on their exterior doors beginning Monday, April 14. Deadline to sign up for a check out time is Wednesday, April 30.
Residents in Porter, Willard or Wright
Residents who live in one of the independent living buildings will not check out with an RA. Residents must turn in their key at the HRL office during business hours or at the dropbox outside of the office. If a resident would like an inspection of their room when checking out, please email Living by Wednesday, April 30 to schedule an inspection. Residents should follow Step 2 below. Failure to properly check out will result in an improper check out charge of $200. This charge is in addition to any damage charges, losses, cleaning charges, or room/board assessment. Failure to return your key will result in an improper check out charge, as well as a $60 lock change fee.
Step 2: Prior to checking out these procedures must be followed to avoid the $200 improper check out charge:
- Remove all your belongings (including trash).
- Clean living room, dining room and bedrooms.
- Sweep, mop and vacuum all floors.
- Clean all counters and drawers.
- Clean the kitchen, refrigerator and stove.
- Clean bathroom, tub, toilet, sink and mirrors.
Step 3: Check out with your RA during your scheduled appointment time. RAs will be completing the room inspection with residents at the time of their scheduled check out. Turn in your key to your RA.
Carts will not be available for students to use when moving out their belongings.
Failure to properly check out will result in an improper check out charge of $200. This charge is in addition to any damage charges, losses, cleaning charges, or room/board assessment. Failure to return your key will result in an improper check out charge, as well as a $60 lock change fee.
When packing up belongings residents are encouraged not to leave items in their vehicles overnight. This provides opportunity for theft.
What if my RA is not available during the time I need to check out?
If your RA does not have availability to do a check out when you need to move out, then please contact your RA.
What if I need to check out after hours or I am checking out after May 10?
If you need to check out after hours (9 p.m.-8 a.m.), then you may use the drop box outside of the HRL office. If you are checking out after May 10, then you may use the drop box or drop off your key inside the HRL office during business hours. Students choosing to use the drop box should take one of the check out packets in the box, fill it out (will need a pen), put the key inside the packet, seal the packet and drop in the box where it says Insert Envelope Here.
It is important to note that by using the drop box, residents are waiving their right to an inspection. This means residents could be responsible for any damages that are found during the inspection.
There will be donation bins located in the residence halls, HRL office, O'Daniel South laundry room and Community Center accepting non-perishable food and gently used clothing. Items will be donated to a local food bank and homeless shelters. Bins will be available April 23-May 12.

They must submit a Stay Late Request and include the class number, class name and time of final scheduled for Friday, May 9.
Request to Stay Late for Other Reasons
If a resident needs to stay later than 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9, they must fill out the Stay Late Request form. Residents must be specific with reason to stay late.
Stay Late Request Form
The Stay Late Request is on the Housing Portal and the deadline to submit is Friday, May 2. Stay Late requests must be approved by HRL staff. Students will receive an email with the status of their request.
- Residents approved to stay late and checking out 6 p.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, May 9 or 8 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, should sign up for a check out time with their RA. Residents checking out after 9 p.m., should turn in their key at the drop box outside of the HRL office.
- Residents checking out on Sunday, May 11 may check out when the HRL office is open (8 a.m.- 6 p.m.) or use the drop box outside of the office.
- HRL will start summer hours on Monday, May 12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
If a resident needs to stay after Sunday, May 11, they must complete a summer housing contract. Residents will be charged by the night for all days in Housing after May 11. The summer contract is on the Housing Portal.
You will not check out. You will be contacted by Housing and Residence Life when your summer assignment is ready for you to move. Students currently living in housing will not move out of their spring assignment until notified their summer assignment is ready. Residents staying for summer need to have completed the summer housing contract. Summer housing rates are $27/night for a four person/two bedroom and $47/night for a two person/two bedroom.
The summer contract is on the Housing Portal.
The USPS considers a campus address as temporary and will not forward mail. Residents will need to notify family, friends and businesses of their address change. Housing and Residence Life will not hold or forward mail/packages even if you are returning for fall. HRL only processes mail/packages for summer housing residents.
To ensure residents receive all mail and packages prior to moving out, residents should not have items sent to HRL after Friday, May 2. Residents must pick up their mail or packages before checking out. Any mail and packages not picked up by Monday, May 12 will be returned to sender.*
*This does not apply to summer housing residents.
The Housing and Residence Life staff are here to help you as you prepare to move out or transition to summer. If you have questions, you may talk with your RA or Area Coordinator. The HRL front desk and the Community Center desk will be available during their normal hours finals week. You may also contact Housing and Residence Life at 812-468-2000 or email Living.
Study hours are midnight on Saturday, May 3 through 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9. The finals week study period is to provide an atmosphere conducive to studying for exams. - Keeping your door closed
- Using headphones when listening to music, watching TV or playing electronic games
- Avoid having conversations in the hallway
- Adjust your alarms and phone volume to comply with Study Hours
- Not vacuuming between 11 p.m. and 10 a.m.
- Close doors quietly
