Registration now open to experience 15th annual Norwegian Foot March

July 22, 2016

Imagine running 18.6 miles. Specifically, 18.6 miles through the rolling hills of Evansville's west side, and along the Ohio River. Carrying a 25-pound rucksack, you're surrounded by hopeful ROTC cadets and civilians alike, venturing toward the finish line with the hope of completing in under four and a half hours. It's an experience awaiting those who will attempt the University of Southern Indiana's Norwegian Foot March, Saturday, October 29.

Registration is currently open for this intense physical challenge, now in its 15th year at USI. ROTC cadets, soldiers, veterans and civilians may register individually or as part of a four-member team. Departing heats start at 7:30 a.m.

Early registration is recommended, as the event sells out quickly. Early registration is $30 per person through July 31. Beginning August 1, open registration will increase to $45 per person and will close on October 15, or when the event is full.

Participants are encouraged to pack their rucksacks with non-perishable food items. In 2015, over 5,000 pounds of food items were donated to Lucas Place II in Evansville, a supportive housing complex for homeless veterans with disabilities.

Those who complete the march within set guidelines will receive a Norwegian Foot March certificate and pin. The Norwegian Foot March is a boot camp tradition for Norwegian soldiers and is sponsored by Dr. Nils Johansen, retired Norwegian Artillery Reserve Officer, retired USI University Division advisor and adjunct instructor of geology and physics.

Proceeds from the Norwegian Foot March benefit the Wabash Battalion Army ROTC program of the University of Southern Indiana. Funds are used to cover costs associated with training, travel, team development and additional equipment that would not be covered otherwise.

Registration also can be completed online or by calling USI Outreach and Engagement at 812-464-1989.
