Exploring Data with Technology - STEM19003 (Registration Closed)

Modern society is increasingly using data, particularly 'big data,' to analyze phenomena and make decisions. In this workshop, teachers will learn to use the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) and other tools to conduct data-based investigations. CODAP is a web-based tool that allows students and teachers to create graphs and other data representations. Students can use CODAP to easily investigate large data sets and explore authentic data situations. Workshop participants will engage in a number of data investigations and will consider how CODAP can be used to teach a number of statistical concepts, including measures of center, measures of spread, categorical association, correlation/regression, and inferential reasoning. We will also discuss pedagogical issues that teachers face when teaching data analysis and statistics. Teachers will leave this workshop with activities that can easily be incorporated into the classroom. Although the workshop is primarily designed for middle and high school mathematics teachers, science teachers who support students in data analysis will also benefit from attending the workshop.
