Creative Writing Submissions

Creative Writing SubmissionsThe University of Southern Indiana's magazine, illume, includes one creative writing submission per issue and is open to alumni, faculty, staff and students. Students must be current at the time of publication or have graduated. Please submit your most professional work—fiction, creative nonfiction or poetry—for consideration. The featured work will be selected by the editorial staff.

Submission Guidelines

Length of submissions should be as follows:

  • Short story, creative nonfiction and essays — minimum of 1,000 words and maximum of 1,500 words
  • Poetry — 3 to 5 poems

Send submissions in the body of an email — no attachments will be opened. Include your name and the genre in the subject line (ex. Jane Smith, fiction), and your name, phone number, email address and a brief writer's biography in the body of the email.

All submissions must be original work. Previously published work will be accepted as long as the author holds the rights to that work. All submitted work may be held for consideration in future issues.

The University regrets authors cannot be paid at this time, but selected submissions will be delivered into hands of the magazine's 47,000 readers. Two contributor's copies of the magazine and an electronic tear sheet for his/her portfolio can be provided to authors published in the magazine.

The University is eager to showcase the works of USI's most creative people, so send your submissions to
