Artist Statement: This virtual exhibit features artwork from Spanish artist Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos [The Whims] and Los Desastres de la Guerra [The Disasters of War] print portfolios. The artist created these works during the latter 18th and early 19th centuries to share his observations of the ills of Spanish society and the devastation of warfare in his homeland. These original prints are from the University Art Collection, a generous donation by Dean Emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts, Michael Aakhus and his late wife and associate professor of English, Patty Aakhus. Ms. Olivia Worland ’20 of Vincennes, Indiana is the art history research assistant for this exhibit. This virtual exhibit will be expanded and physically displayed in the John M. Lawrence ’73 Library, located in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center (LA 0119) during the academic year 2021-2022.
