MAGIC 1-Credit Course

HP490 Special Topics Course - ST-MAGIC:MultiGenInclCommBldg (Multi-Ability, multi-Generational Inclusive Community Building)

Kyrié Carpenter, a member of Dr. Bill Thomas’ team, will be teaching the MAGIC class in the Fall 2019 semester.

This one-credit hour course is offered in two formats: a two-day intensive (Friday 3-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) and online (for USI students only).

The MAGIC intensive class is open to USI students, community members and USI employees, which will result in a class roster that is intergenerational.

About the Class

Course Description: An introduction to the MAGIC pilot project between Dr. Bill Thomas and USI and an exploration of how students can participate in the project. During the course, participants will explore the dynamic complexity of building inclusive communities for people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds. MAGIC Instructor:

Kyrié Carpenter is a radically pro-aging and dementia positive coach and thinker. Kyrié’s passion for story led her to a career in film, studies in Depth Psychology, and ultimately her work with aging. She is a book author and blog contributor.

Guest Speaker: Kavan Peterson co-founded and directs the ChangingAging blog and national tour. Kavan is a leading voice building aging-in-community and dementia-friendly initiatives in Seattle and nationwide. For the MAGIC class weekend, he will help Kyrie lead design-thinking exercises called Liberating Structures to help students continue this work in the community.
