Description of Program
The ever-changing world of healthcare continually affords new opportunities in clinical practice whether in the in-patient or out-patient setting. The challenge for practicing healthcare professionals is to be able to interact with this environment in a way that impacts the care they deliver. The rapidly evolving field of health informatics requires the acquisition of changing tools and knowledge. This program is designed to assist the healthcare professional to understand, implement, manage, and evaluate information technology within healthcare. The program was designed utilizing the certification test plans as established by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society for the CAHIMS certification examination and the American Nurses Credentialing Center for Informatics Nursing.

Who Should Enroll in this Program?
This program is designed for English-speaking healthcare professionals who have, or want to prepare for, the various roles that require monitoring and managing informatics.
The content is divided into modules. Each module utilizes instructor outlines, audio/video recordings, reading assignments, articles, web resources, case studies to augment the learning process. These methods provide the participant with flexibility in completing assignments and interacting with the faculty. Each module has accompanying study guide(s) with questions (such as multiple choice, essay) for participants to submit to faculty. Interaction with faculty may occur via feedback to study guides, discussion boards, or email. The modules cover foundations of health informatics, information systems, privacy/security, ethics, informatics application, project management, population health, and data mining.
The textbook is required for this program. Upon registration, you will receive detailed information to purchase the textbook.
This 10-week activity is offered twice a year. The deadline for registration is the Monday prior to the start date by 8 a.m. CDT.

The learning outcome of this activity is to enable the learner to successfully integrate the knowledge and skills of health informatics into their clinical practice through interprofessional collaborative practice.

Delivery of Content
The content is delivered asynchronous via an online learning management system, Blackboard. The internet instructor provides an opportunity for interaction with program faculty while in the comfort of learning in your own home and office.
Note: Many businesses, especially government agencies or health institutions, utilize security firewalls. Access to web links within program and communication from the instructor, or other students may be blocked. We recommend not using your work email address for this course.

Criteria for Successful Completion
The certificate of completion will be sent via email immediately upon the completion of the program evaluation.
Successful completion of this program does not guarantee expertise in the content. Clinical experience and judgment coupled with an understanding of the content are necessary to attain competency. Achieving certification via a designated professional organization is an additional step to demonstrate competency.
