STARs (Students Teaching & Advocating Resilience) is a volunteer leadership experience for students who are interested in the health and well-being of other USI students. STARs are responsible for assisting with outreach events that address different health topics, as well as developing their own programs and presentations.

Example programs that STARs peer educators have implemented include:

  • The Condom Carnival during Safe Spring Break Week
  • Tabling outreach about stress management, sun safety, and sleep.
  • Disability etiquette presentations

STARS is a designed to provide students with new opportunities to connect with fellow students, model positive health behaviors, gain skills in program planning and implementation, and gain knowledge on health topics. It is a valuable experience for students who are majoring in or plan to pursue a career in a helping profession, including psychology, social work, and health professions. A small group of staff from the Counseling Center; Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness; and Housing & Residence Life advises STARs.
