September 21, 2016
The University of Southern Indiana's Historic Southern Indiana (HSI), in collaboration with Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, will present a two-day Lincoln Colloquium on October 7-8 in Lincoln City, Indiana. The theme of this year's seminar, the 31st presented by HSI, is "Lincoln in Public Memory."
"We are excited to once again work with Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial to bring the annual Lincoln Colloquium to southern Indiana," said Leslie Townsend, director of USI Community Engagement. "The first day will feature scholarly lectures dealing with Lincoln in public memory and how we view him today. Day two will give participants the opportunity to visit Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and see where he spent his formative years."
The event will feature scholars and authors from around the country presenting on Lincoln's cultural legacy. Speakers will include:
- Barry Schwartz - professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Georgia and author of five books, including Abraham Lincoln and the Forge of National Memory.
- Richard Fox - a professor of history at the University of Southern California and author of Lincoln's Body: A Cultural History.
- Edward T. Linenthal - professor of history at Indiana University and author of Preserving History: The Struggle to Create America's Holocaust Museum and Sacred Ground: American and their Battlefields.
