Commencement ceremony for College of Liberal Arts to be held on April 30

The University of Southern Indiana will hold a Commencement ceremony for undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts at noon Saturday, April 30 in the Physical Activities Center (PAC) on the USI campus

The 2016 College of Liberal Arts Commencement speaker is Becky J. Boling '75. A graduate of USI, Boling completed her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Studies in 1975. She currently is a professor of Spanish and Latin American literature at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

After graduating from USI, she went on to Indiana State University where she earned a Master of Arts and Sciences in Foreign Languages (Spanish). She then attended Northwestern University where she received a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies (Spanish). While working on her doctorate, she was an instructor at both Northwestern University and Illinois Institute of Technology. She also taught English for three years at St. Augustine Community College, mostly to Spanish-speaking residents. After leaving the Chicago area, she accepted a teaching position at Carleton College in 1983.

In 2009, Boling was designated as an endowed chair, and became the Stephen R. Lewis, Jr. Professor of Spanish and the Liberal Arts at Carleton College, where she currently serves on the Language Center Advisory Board. Since 1983, she has been involved in over 20 committees and boards, and has been a member of the Latin American Studies Interdisciplinary Program for 33 years. For many years, she directed and taught in the department's off-campus studies program in Mexico. She also has served on departmental and program reviews on the Carleton campus, and as an outside reviewer for tenure reviews at other institutions.

She has been a member of several organizations including the Modern Language Association, Midwest Modern Language Association and Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana. She also has been a member of the editorial board of Latin American Theatre Review since 1989. She is a published author on topics related to Latin American literature, narrative and theatre, and has been published on topics related to major Latin American authors such as Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez, Susana Torres Molina, Sylvia Molloy and Griselda Gambaro.

Guests of graduates participating in the College of Liberal Arts ceremony will need tickets. A reception for the graduates and their friends and families will follow the ceremony and will be held in University Center East.
