USI instructor to explore roller derby as part of faculty colloquia

February 10, 2016

The world of women's roller derby is an often physical yet inclusive sport that is pushing the limits of gender roles and female athleticism. Since its creation in the early 2000s, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association has grown to include 355 leagues and 72 apprentice leagues worldwide.

University of Southern Indiana English instructor Jenn Horn will discuss the past, present and future of the activity in her free public presentation, "Women's Roller Derby: Challenging (Gendered) Stereotypes and Creating Inclusivity One Pair of Skates at a Time." The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, February 26 in Kleymeyer Hall (LA 0101).

This lecture will look at how women's roller derby actively challenges cultural norms and expectations, while working to promote a welcoming environment for all women.

This is the second presentation in this semester's Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquia. The colloquium is a free lecture series featuring faculty research in the College of Liberal Arts.
