GLVC Player of Year Dorsam leads 4 Eagles on All-GLVC teams

May 4, 2015

University of Southern Indiana senior second baseman (Brenna) MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana), a health services major, was honored as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player of the Year Thursday night at the GLVC Awards Banquet.

Dorsam, who is the second player in program history and the first since Karianne Osowski in 1995 to earn GLVC Player of the Year accolades, led the conference during the regular season in batting average (.461), slugging percentage (.879), on-base percentage (.556), runs scored (47), hits per game (1.48), total bases (124), and RBIs per game (1.14).

A third-team All-American as a utility player a year ago, Dorsam also was second in the league this year in RBIs (50), runs scored per game (1.07), walks (27), walks per game (0.61), and plate appearances per game (3.89). She ended the regular-season ranked third in the league in hits (65) and fourth in home runs (15).

Dorsam, who was honored as the Old National Bank/USI Female Student Athlete of the Year less than two weeks ago, is just one home run shy of Rachel Bowling's single-season school record of 16, set in 2002, and Sara Loete's single-season RBI record of 54, set in 2008.

Joining Dorsam on the All-GLVC first team was senior pitcher/first baseman Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana). Sophomore outfielder Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana) earned second-team All-GLVC accolades, while junior third baseman Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana) was selected to the third team.

Harmening, who was named first-team All-GLVC as a pitcher for the third straight season, finished the regular-season with a 21-2 overall record, four saves, and a 1.50 ERA. She ranked third in the GLVC in wins, second in saves, fourth in ERA, and fifth in opposing batting average (.226).

This season, Harmening moved into first-place all-time at USI in career wins (72), strikeouts (618), and innings pitched (763). Harmening helped her cause at the plate, where she hit .345 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs.

Both Clark and Braun are earning All-GLVC honors for the first time in their careers. Clark hit .395 with 12 doubles, five home runs, and 26 RBIs this season, while Braun batted .351 with a triple and 19 RBIs.

USI, which is ranked No. 13 in the nation and No. 4 in the final NCAA II Midwest Region rankings, begins GLVC Championship Tournament play Friday when it takes on Lewis University in the opening round.

The Screaming Eagles, who earned the No. 3 seed in the GLVC Tournament, finished the year with a 37-7 overall record and a 22-6 mark in GLVC play.

Lewis is the No. 6 seed this weekend after finishing the regular-season with a 25-20 overall record and a 15-13 mark in league play. USI swept the Flyers in a GLVC doubleheader earlier this month, winning game one, 7-2, and game two, 4-1.
