New art exhibit focuses on Indiana Dunes

March 20, 2015

New Harmony State Historic Site's newest art exhibition, Painter of the Indiana Dunes: The Art of Frank V. Dudley will open on March 23 in the historic Scholle House. The show will feature works focused on the Indiana Dunes by the renowned painter Frank V. Dudley.

"The Indiana Dunes are a national treasure," said Amanda Bryden, site manager for the New Harmony State Historic Site. "The shoreline along Lake Michigan is stunning, and the area is a haven for rare, threatened and endangered plants and animals. One goal of the exhibit is to showcase another region of Indiana and to encourage folks to explore our diverse state."

Frank V. Dudley (1868 - 1957) was born in Delevan, Wisconsin, but spent most of his life in Chicago, where he owned The Dudley Store, a photography and art supplies retail business. Once introduced to the Indiana Dunes around 1910, Dudley began capturing images of the Lake Michigan shore line, in the area that is now the Indiana Dunes State Park, in Porter County. Dudley is the recipient of Frank G. Logan Medal from the Art Institute of if Chicago for his painting Duneland.

The exhibit will be included as part of Historic New Harmony's guided walking tours. Tours take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily from the Atheneum/Visitors Center. Information on the tour program and how to obtain tickets may be found at www.newharmony.org

A public reception for the exhibit will take place April 19, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the historic Scholle House. Call 812.682.3702 for details.

The artwork on display is from the permanent collection of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, and will be on view in the historic Scholle House through December 2016.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Southwestern Indiana Historical Society, Inc., New Harmony State Historic Site and was produced by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

Historic New Harmony is a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.
