Undergraduate nursing students participate in Nutritional Awareness Day

April 22, 2014

Eight students in the undergraduate nursing program participated in the Nutritional Awareness Day at SWIRCA & More on March 19, sharing knowledge on blood pressure control, promotion of healthy nutritional guidelines, and exercise promotion. They are enrolled in the N361 course, "Care of Elders and Their Families."

The Nutritional Awareness Day, sponsored by SWIRCA & More, is part of a state initiative to promote adequate nutrition and to decrease obesity in Indiana. Prior to the event, the students developed a promotional flier and helped SWIRCA & More market the event throughout the Tri-State area.

During Nutritional Awareness Day, the nursing students took blood pressures and shared health information for seniors. Approximately 100 older adults viewed the students' posters and received handouts on healthy aging.

"Our students were surprised at the number of questions they were asked and the seniors' lack of knowledge regarding their own blood pressure medications," said Pam Thomas, USI nursing instructor. "This Service Learning project really opened their eyes about the need for older adults to be aware of their diet and other lifestyle issues as they grow older."
