Hackert nabs GLVC weekly honor

January 8, 2013

The Great Lakes Valley Conference has named University of Southern Indiana sophomore forward/center Anna Hackert its women's basketball Player of the Week following her efforts in the Screaming Eagles' conference victories last week.

Hackert, a Memorial High School graduate, averaged 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game to lead USI to victories over the University of Missouri-St. Louis and defending GLVC Tournament champion Maryville University.

In USI's 73-65 victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday, Hackert scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Eagles rallied from a 36-31 second-half deficit to earn their first GLVC-opening victory since the 2009-10 season. She racked up six points and grabbed seven of her rebounds in the final 20 minutes to help USI overcome its first halftime deficit of the season.

Hackert finished the week by racking up 20 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in USI's 69-63 win over Maryville. She scored all of her points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out four assists in the final 20 minutes as the Eagles rallied from a 52-49 deficit to record its 11th straight win dating back to the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

A mathematics and teaching major, Hackert is the first USI women's basketball player to earn GLVC Player of the Week honors since fellow classmate Mary O'Keefe garnered the distinction in December of 2011. She shot 56.0 percent from the field and dished out 3.0 assists per game.

For the season, Hackert leads the Eagles with 13.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest and is shooting a blistering 57.7 percent from the field.

USI is off to its best start (10-0, 2-0 GLVC) since the 1997-98 campaign and is one of only nine unbeaten teams in the NCAA Division II.

The Eagles return to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they visit the University of Illinois Springfield. USI concludes its first GLVC road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. when it travels to Quincy, Illinois, to take on Quincy University.
