Dr. Paul A. Kuban, associate professor of engineering and the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award, will present the Distinguished Professor Lecture at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, in Kleymeyer Hall in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. The title of his lecture is “Instrumental Inventiveness.”
"I'll discuss several people and their important inventions, which were musically motivated, and also contributed greatly to the modern era of electronic communications," Kuban said.
Kuban is a musician and plays guitar in the rhythm and blues band Hoosier Daddy. In 2011, he was issued the first patent for a USI faculty member working with USI's Center for Applied Research and Economic Development.
The product is called the CAN-Bee Interface, the name reflecting the creation of the Controller Area Network (CAN) to ZigBee Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) interface. The interface integrates conventional hardware components and custom firmware.
Using technology based on the CAN-Bee Interface, he has devised a wireless switching system for synthesizers and amplifiers he uses while playing in the band.
The Distinguished Professor receives a monetary grant and will select a student to receive a scholarship in his name next year.
Kuban also will deliver the address at the fall Commencement on Saturday, December 8.
