New Harmony International Conference

Contemporary Spanish Theater: Stages of Utopia, Dystopia, and Myopia

October 10-12, 2018

New Harmony, Indiana

Sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana, under the direction of the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of World Languages and Cultures

The historic town of New Harmony, backdrop for two attempts at establishing intentional communities in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, will be the fitting site for an international conference on the utopian pursuit in contemporary Spanish theater (20th and 21st centuries). The conference seeks to attract diverse presentations rooted in the intersection of contemporary drama and common visions--social, economic, political, spiritual, or ecological--for working in unison, even if the cooperative models aspired to by community members prove to be misunderstood or destined for failure. The organizers are particularly interested in encouraging the free exploration of such varied themes as conformity, disagreement, alienation, displacements, migrations, revolt, totalitarianism, and many other approaches related to intentional settings.

Abstracts and proposals of no more than 250 words must be submitted electronically by April 1, 2018 for the following:

  • Individual papers of no more than 20 minutes duration
  • Panel proposals for a maximum of four participants
  • Poster or similar graphic presentation

Papers will be accepted in English or Spanish, but reading time may NOT exceed 20 minutes. Together with your proposal, please indicate any audiovisual needs (video, DVD, computer with LCD projector, etc.)  Proposal (in Word) must be attached to an email message sent to: nhspanishtheaterconf2018@gmail.comPublication of selected proceeding of the conference is anticipated for 2019.
